Suddenly Working from Home? Maximize Your Productivity

Working remotely is a work culture trend that has been on the rise these past few years. And currently due to the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak there has been a significant increase in employees working from home, all across the globe. Irrespective of the reason behind it, if you are new to the “work from home” routine it’s important to learn how best to adjust to this change. You can maximize your company’s productivity while ensuring minimal disruption to your family and home life by following these simple but effective tips and best practices:

        1. Start right – make your bed to provide a good start to a more organized and focused day.
        2. Get dressed and feel professional.
        3. Schedule regular working hours
        4. Identify the best place in your home that will be least disruptive to your family and give you the quality you need to concentrate on your work. Consider the following:
          • Ensure good ventilation & temperature control
          • Setup good lighting, especially for video conferencing to avoid shadowing
          • Ergonomics
          • Proper desk height
          • Proper chair for long sitting
          • Pay attention to your head position and arm extension when using a keyboard and mouse to help avoid fatigue and discomfort.
          • Consider a noise cancellation headset
          • Good Wi-Fi coverage
        5. Verify you have good internet bandwidth (25mbps min recommended) and ability to handle the number of connections now that possibly multiple family members are home. Check with your provider for limits.
        6. Use Cloud applications to ensure proper file sharing and better protection from loss data.
        7. Take care of your digital health by making security awareness a top priority. Reduce human error and ensure that you have email continuityProtect your emails from malware, phishing, hacking, etc. This can be done by undergoing security awareness trainings at regular intervals.
        8. Setup VPN if you need access to office resources.
        9. Use a company instant messaging tool like Slack.

        11. Take regular breaks, stretch and move about every 30-60 minutes
        12. Remember to snack and take at least a 30-minute lunch break away from your computer.
        13. Inform those home when you are attending meetings or on calls. Place a note or do not disturb message on your door.
        14. Play low volume music for the ambiance and comfortable environment.
        15. And last but not the least, wash your hands and sanitize your home often:
          • Doorknobs, keyboards, phones, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.
